The Hales Corners Library is excited to announce the launch of the Books for Seniors Program. This innovative program, maintained by the dedicated volunteers of the Friends of the Hales Corners Library and overseen by the Library Director, aims to provide free books to senior residence communities or centers in the Hales Corners Village and nearby areas.

The program will be offered to five senior residence communities or centers within a five-mile radius of the library as part of a pilot rollout. Each participating organization will receive one bookcase stocked with books that were donated to or withdrawn from the Hales Corners Library. There will also be a rolling cart provided for the organization’s staff to take books to seniors to choose in their rooms. Bookcases and carts are generously supplied by the Hales Corners Health Department.

Unlike traditional library services, this program will operate on a model similar to Little Free Libraries, where books can be taken without the need for checkout or return. The Friends of the Library volunteers will refresh the bookshelves every one to two months, depending on demand, ensuring a continuous supply of reading material for seniors who may not be able to make it to the library in-person.

Eligibility for the Program is as follows:
  • Be a residence community or center designated for Seniors.
  • Be within  5 miles of the Hales Corners Library (5885 S 116th St). Preference is given to facilities in the Village of Hales Corners.
  • Have a dedicated staff person to act as coordinator to request book refresh through our online form and communicate with the library, as needed.
  • Have a space in the facility that is accessible to the public for the bookshelf.
  • Maintain signage for the program on the bookshelf, book cart, and any provided paper materials.
  • Participate in a program follow-up survey.

If you are a resident of a senior community or center and are interested in your community to be a part of the program, please share this information with your  administration.
